Drive on to Sarahan, a little hamlet at about 7,100 ft that is easy to explore on foot. Shrikhand Mahadev rises above the town and the Sutlej runs in the valley below. Visit the Bhimakali temple before dinner.

After breakfast, drive to Chitkul, the last village on the old Indo-Tibetan trade route. Walk through orchards beside a bright stream with a high-altitude river running past the village, and take in the peaks around it; Chitkul is where several high treks begin and end. Back to Sangla for dinner.

An early start for Tabo. Stop at Khab, where the Sutlej meets the Spiti river, then drive through Nako for its lake and monastery. Check in to a homestay in Tabo, home to Tabo Gompa, founded in 996 AD and the oldest and largest monastery in Spiti.

Key Monastery first, then Chicham bridge, Asia’s highest. Post a card from Hikkim, home of the world’s highest post office, drive up to Komic, one of the highest villages reached by road, and finish at the Buddha statue in Langza. Back to Kaza for dinner. The high villages depend on snow on the day.
